Jeff Dekal
With a self taught, rock solid foundation in traditional drawing, Jeff (Dekal) Becker spends much of his life producing illustrations bordering urban and uncanny. His introduction to graffiti while in high school gave the first serious meaning to Jeff’s art and is also where he adopted his alias, Dekal. College art history gave his art even more meaning though. After learning about artists such as Degas and Rembrandt, he was inspired to stray from the naïve characters and abstract letters of graffiti and focus more on the finer side of figurative art while still keeping a distorted twist within his work. Jeff’s characters and figures usually exist in an untouchable state because that status is nonexistent in this world. We are vulnerable in so many different ways and can be touched at any moment. Jeff puts his figures in these positions of power, or has them in control of uncontrollable situations because he doesn’t believe that we ultimately control our lives. Since Jeff has ultimate control of his art though, he would rather see his figures in a timeless state as opposed to a mundane everyday type of situation.
