Evil Ed

Acclaimed producer Evil Ed has been a Hip Hop junkie since 1984 when he made pause button mixes and checked out the freshest new Hip Hop tunes with a then unsigned Silver Bullet. In the eighties Ed was hooked on the sounds of producers such as Marley Marl and this inspired him to start making beats.

In 1990 Ed formed the crew Hidden Identity with emcee Mistima and in 1994 the duo released the “Blunted Bumpkin Buskers” EP on the Pure Rudeness label. The EP received extensive airplay from Max and Dave on Kiss FM and DJ 279 On Choice FM and this exposure gave Ed the inspiration to step up his production skills and release further material. In 1998 Ed teamed up with an old friend Makif and released the critically acclaimed “Soliloquy Ode” EP which also featured the emcee Nebuchadnezzar. This EP led to a chance meeting with Jehst in Huddersfield record shop 4th Wave the same year and the two soon developed a productive working relationship.

In 1999 Ed produced the track “Firepower” (feat. Gunshot, Task Force, Bury Crew and Jehst) for Disorda’s “UK Hustlers” Vol.6 and provided beats for Jehst’s “Premonitions” EP (YNR). Ed then produced tracks for subsequent YNR releases by Nmonic and Tommy Evans and co-produced beats with Jehst for the tracks “Time Capsule” and “Ophelia” by Tommy Evans.

Ed dropped his own solo EP “The Tournament-Round One” on YNR in early 2001 to critical acclaim. The EP featured the vocal talents of Task Force, Jehst, Usmaan and Tommy Evans with cuts by DJ Eddie Skratch. Ed followed this up in March 2002 with “The Tournament-Round Two-It’s a Knockout” on his own Hidden Identity Productions label, featuring Aspects, Yungun, and Microdisiacs with cuts once again provided by Eddie Skratch.

Now one of the most prolific beat makers in the UK, Ed is held in high esteem having produced countless bangers for the likes of Asaviour, Manchester crew Microdisiacs (now known as Broke’N’English), Junior Disprol (Fleapit), Conspicuous The Coroner, The Colony, Doc Brown, Probe Mantis and Mudmowf to name but a few. Ed has lent his production talents to a many YNR releases, producing the classic “You/Me” for Tommy Evans and contributing beats to both Tommy’s “The Turbulent Times Of…” CD and “New Years Revolutions” LP. Ed is also responsible for a number of blazing hot remixes such as Quantic’s “Primate Boogaloo” (feat. Aspects) (Tru Thoughts) and the cult classic “Seein’ Red” (feat. Farma G, Jehst, Skriblah and Sundragon) (YNR).

In 2004 Ed released his first full length LP “The Enthusiast” through the Brighton based label Janomi. This long-awaited double vinyl/CD featured the cream of UK emcees and DJ’s over Ed’s trademark heavy beats, with contributions from Mr Thing, Kyza, Doc Brown, Jehst and Yungun to name a few.

Ed currently resides in the South East of England with his long-term partner and baby daughter. Juggling family life, making beats and a full-time job, it’s a minor miracle that Ed finds time to maintain his profile on the DJ circuit supporting Hip Hop legends such as Melle Mel, Pete Rock, DJ Cash Money, The Heiroglyphics, and Prince Paul.

Ed has released a series of 7” singles on his own HID imprint, including the left-of-centre Hansell The Unicorn’s “£5 An Hour” EP as well as two live mix CD’s with fellow vinyl fiend K-Delight. Ed’s second full length album as producer ‘The Get Together’ with Colony frontman, Conspicuous and a host of guest MC’s, was released late 2008 and received extensive radio play from BBC 1Xtra’s DJ Sarah Love. Ed has beats on forthcoming projects by The Colony, Mudmowth and Bobba Fresh, too name a few, and is currently working on new material, including remix & production work for Project Mooncircle.
